A laboratory simulation method to study the three-dimensional time-integrated deformation of a convecting fluid is presented. The method makes it possible to study the progressive deformation of mantle rock by solid-state convection three-dimensionally in a real fluid. The experimental design and philosophy are described and results are presented from the simulation of the structural developments in the earth's upper mantle over a period of two billion years.
