An experimental and theoretical investigation of the magnetic dipole (A) and electric quadrupole (B) hyperfine coupling constants for levels in the lowest configurations in singly ionized scandium is presented. Within the framework of the configuration-interaction method, an approach for the calculation of the core polarization, which uses a virtual basis set localized inside the core, is presented. For all levels, this approach yields better results compared to previously published calculations.
