Self-potential anomalies observed on volcanoes may be closely associated with thermoelectric, electrochemical or electrokinetic couplings. Calculations based on irreversible thermodynamics and on laboratory measurements of streaming potentials allow us to estimate the amplitude of the anomalies generated by each mechanism. In order to obtain realistic results, values of the parameters used in the calculations or used to draw conclusions from the streaming potential measurements were chosen according to in-situ tests or laboratory measurements with samples of volcanic origin. Results show clearly the pronounced predominance of the streaming potentials effects (300 mV) upon thermoelectric (30 mV) and electrochemical (10 mV) couplings.
