[2114] Interplanetary Physics / Energetic Particles
Scientific paper
We report here the results from two scientific investigations using observations from several Ulysses investigations (HISCALE, SWOOPS, MAG, COSPIN). The first investigation compares computer models of the energization of protons by interplanetary shocks with HISCALE observations of the energy spectra and angular distributions of protons from 30 keV to about 2 MeV. The second investigation continues the characterization of the energy spectra and angular distributions of charged particles observed in the interplanetary medium at all heliolatitudes and includes all of the available Ulysses observations from launch through the end of mission of June 30, 2009. Both studies are aided by the availability of Advanced Compositions Explorer EPAM investigation data owing in large part to the similarity of the HISCALE and EPAM instrumentation and the fact that the data are prepared in similar formats. We will present the highlights of the results and describe the major aspects of using virtual observatory data efficiently and correctly. One of us (Summerlin) began using observational data with no specific knowledge of the Ulysses mission, the HISCALE investigation, prior to the end of the Ulysses mission and several of us (Armstrong, Patterson) have participated in all phases of the HISCALE investigation. We hope that this report on our experience will be useful to others and will reveal needed improvements in the presentation and availability of Vurtual Heliospheric Observatory data.
