The objectives and the current status of the VAP program conducted by the French Space Agency in association with a consortium of laboratories are presented. VAP concepts such as 3D reconstruction by stereovision and path generation are examined as applied in the frame of the Russian Marsokhod program. Attention is given to resources and system constraints, the baseline robotic concepts and validation, and the I. ARES demonstrator.
