We have used neutral densities (rho) inferred from accelerometer measurements of the polar-orbiting CHAMP satellite to compile a database of exospheric temperatures (T') during the declining phase of the recent solar- cycle. Our ultimate goals are to quantify the thermosphere's total energy budget and identify the sources apparent in response to geomagnetic activity. Data were treated in two ways. The first used orbit-averaged values of rho. The second method binned rho according to latitude, local time, altitude (h) and rho. Equivalent values of T' were then estimated using rho-h-T relationships implicit in the Jacchia 70 model. Our analysis focused on the behaviors of globally averaged T' with derived latitude-versus-local time distributions. Specifically, we compared observed ratios of daytime maxima with nighttime minima with Jacchia-model predictions T' max = 1.28 T' min. For the years 2001 to 2005 the average ratio is 1.4, but ranges from 1.58 in 2001 to 1.29 in 2005. The ratio also exhibits a seasonal dependence. In particular during the July 2002 semiannual minimum, a very high ratio resulted from a particularly cold average nighttime minimum temperature for the May-August period. Implications for modeling distributions of T' and normalizing them to global averaged values will be discussed.
