A description is provided of the first phase of an investigation of excitation processes involved in a low-energy proton and H atom impact on N2. The processes are related to the excitation of the N2(+) 3914-A band emission by 0.1- to 6.0-keV proton impact on N2. In this energy range, electron capture is a dominating reaction which converts a large fraction of auroral protons to neutral atoms. The apparatus and the procedure used in the investigation are considered, taking into account the duoplasmatron ion source, the Einzel lens system, the beam steering plates, the electron repeller, and the collision chamber. The results of the investigation are presented in a number of graphs.
