Relativistic stars exhibit several types of quasinormal modes. Most have Newtonian analogs and are slowly damped. For very relativistic stellar models there also exist strongly damped modes analogous to those of black holes. It is well known that these modes are excited when a particle passes close to a Schwarzschild black hole for a restricted set of energies and angular momentum of the particle. This talk will report on work in progress on the excitation of the odd parity modes of a relativistic star by a particle passing close to the star.
