The paper presents results of experiments carried out at the Gorkii facility during 1980-1983 concerning the excitation of geomagnetic pulsations by the periodic heating of the ionosphere. The main result is the first reliable detection at midlatitudes of artificial geomagnetic pulsations produced by high-power short wave transmissions: combination-frequency signals in the 0.1-10 Hz range with an amplitude of 50-100 mu-gamma, excited by modulated emission from the Sura heating stand. A number of nontrivial properties of the artificial signals are observed which cannot be explained by the ionospheric-current model of excitation.
