Laboratory measurements on the rate coefficient of the termolecular association reaction O + O + N2 yields O2 + N2 were obtained in order to investigate the source of the excited oxygen molecules contributing to the terrestrial nightglow. Owing to the effect of redissociation, it is shown that the weakly bound state 5Pi(g) could not have contributed significantly. It is noted that the Herzberg I, Chamberlain, and Herzberg II systems are severely quenched in the nightglow.
