The paper examines the motion of a viscoelastic sphere (a planet) whose center of mass moves in circular orbit in a central Newtonian force field. The method of separation of motions and averaging is used to obtain approximate equations describing the rotational motion of the sphere in canonical variables, and the evolution of this motion is analyzed.
