The evolution of a rapidly rotating viscoelastic body in a central force field in elliptic orbit is investigated analytically using the motion separation method developed by Vilke (1988) for systems with distributed parameters. By using this approximation, a detailed study is made of the slow motions of the kinetic moment vector relative to the orbit plane. The eventual gravitational capture of the system is demonstrated, with the moment of momentum of the body tending to a position normal to the orbit plane.
