A 3D model is described and used to characterize the evolution of the artificial plasma generated about spacecraft that eject neutrals and plasma into the ionosphere. The contamination simulations presented are based on the generation of a water plasma by spacecraft which eject neutral H2O, and the released neutrals are evaluated for varied parameters such as release velocity, altitude, and thrust-vector orientation. The flow of the released neutrals is found to be in the free-molecular regime and in the form of a water cloud approximately as dense as ambient O(+) particles. Depletion and enhancement regions are identified in the ambient clouds caused by the spacecraft. Comparisons with experimental data from Space Shuttle missions provide constraints on the densities of H2O, H2O(+), O(+), and electrons. The 3D simulations provide important data on the limitations of spacecraft studies of ambient plasmas due to the interaction of the gas releases with electric fields, radiation emission, and the densities and velocities of plasmas.
