A chronomorphosequence of landforms on Mars has been performed, suggesting that there were long periods of warmer climate on Mars in the past. The detected morphology is consistent with the occurrence of three periods of volcanic activity, with volcanaic ash increasing the absorption of solar radiation by the atmosphere and possibly explaining the existence of a warmer, more humid climate. According to the hypothesis, running surface water eroded the old landforms, cut valleys, and reworked the volcanic ash (the main constituent of the successive embankments). It is noted that the role of running water probably ceased towards the end of the last period of land filling.
