The collision between the ejecta of SN 1987A and its circumstellar ring is now underway. Over the next few years radical changes should occur in the circumstellar nebula (that we mapped previously using CTIO data), as it is overrun by ejecta expanding at a substantial fraction of c. The collision is predicted to produce intense IR and optical emission, in new and previously observed lines. Depending on whether they arise in the ejecta or nebula, and whether they are shock or EUV excited, these lines will have widths from ~ 10 to 15,000 km s^- 1. Frequent moderate-dispersion spectra are proposed to monitor these features (as are higher resolution spectra already scheduled). The collison is also expected to emit intense IR emission including several key diagnostic lines of shock and EUV excitation. We propose to monitor this dramatic event by obtaining near-IR images with the f/14 tip-tilt system on the CTIO 4m at regular intervals. This system delivers spatial resolution within a factor of two of that obtained with HST+NICMOS and substantialy higher S/N, allowing us to continue monitoring long after NICMOS ceases to operate. This effort will, for the first time, chronicle the events before and during the creation of a SN remnant.
