The luminosity-volume test is applied to a composite sample of about 400 low and intermediate-redshift QSOs to determine characteristic parameters for four simple monoparametric models of cosmological evolution. The calculations are based on analytic expressions of maximum volumes in terms of the QSO intrinsic luminosity, derived here for two cosmological models (q/0/ = 0 and 1/2). From the whole sample, and for each evolution model, a global optical luminosity function (GLF) at the epoch z = 0 is constructed. Then, the restricted luminosity functions (RLF) directly derived in six redshift ranges are compared to the GLF shifted to these redshifts according to the model. Such a procedure makes it possible to check the self-consistency of each model without any unnecessary assumption on the functional form of the luminosity function. No model is acceptable to any reasonable confidence level, but luminosity evolution is slightly favored. The results indicate that simple monoparametric models cannot provide a satisfactory picture of quasar evolution.
