The quasar 0836 + 71 (4C 71.07) displays a pronounced and continuous jet with at least eleven components when mapped with VLBI at frequencies between 326 MHz and 22 GHz. The 326 MHz VLBI observations trace the jet over 180 marcsec. New Merlin observations at 408 MHz suggest a total jet length of at least 30 kpc. Repeated 5 GHz VLBI observations find apparent superluminal motion with beta (app) = 9.5/h close to the core and beta (app) = 5.9 h at a deprojected distance of approximately 220/h pc from the core. There appears to be a stationary component in the jet located at an intermediate distance from the compact core. The transverse expansion of the jet has been measured and appears to display nonadiabatic behavior. The opening angle of the jet indicates strongly confined expansion. 0836 + 71 displays strong polarization indicating that the magnetic field is oriented parallel to the jet axis. Physical properties of the source and its jet are discussed.
