A statistical approach is used to study the evolution of the Oort cloud's perihelion distance distribution over the age of the solar system, under gravitational perturbations of random passing stars which are accounted for by means of an empirical relation between cometary perihelion distance and the closest approach comet-star distance. Perihelion distances initially smaller and greater than 2500 AU are considered, together with distant star-comet encounters. Estimates are given of the number of new comets entering into the planetary region, the number of comets escaping the sun's sphere of influence or lost by hyperbolic ejection, and the percentage of comet loss over the age of the solar system. Current and original cloud populations are deduced from these quantities, together with the corresponding cloud mass, for two formation scenarios.
