Two fundamental questions in magnetospheric physics are where and when substorms begin in the magnetotail. Time resolved, remote measurements of the ion temperature throughout the entire magnetotail can provide detailed information about plasma heating and the propagation of energetic ions in the magnetotail. We present time resolved, remote ion temperature measurements of the magnetosphere from 10 RE to -60 RE for the first 48 hours of the storm of 4-7 October 2000. Ion heating is observed coincident with substorm injections at 06:00 UT and 17:20 UT on 4 Oct. The increase in ion temperatures for the 06:00 UT substorm was observed close to the Earth, most likely in the horns of the plasma sheet. For the 17:20 UT substorm, ion heating was observed around -12 RE and was followed by sawtooth oscillations in ion temperature, indicating the occurrence of periodic substorm activity.
