The nitrate concentration in a drilled firn core in Antarctica was measured via ultraviolet spectrophotometry under tightly controlled experimental conditions. Uninterrupted high-resolution sampling revealed that nitrate concentration variations averaged about 53 percent of the mean concentration for the entire core. The time series produced from 1393 individual analyses reveals a statistically significant background signal modulation that is due to solar activity. Large concentration peaks correlating with major solar proton events of August 1972, July 1946, and the white-light flare of July 1928 were observed.
