The paper reviews the results of the various beam dump experiments performed so far. Their implications for the charmed particle lifetime are also presented and discussed. It is concluded that the prompt neutrino excess observed in beam dump experiments is very likely due to the semileptonic decays of charmed particles, reproduced with a cross section of the order of several tens microbarn.
