Goethite ( -FeOOH) synthesized in the presence of Mn incorporates up to ca. 15 mole% Mn into its structure. This conclusion is based on a shift towards the isostructural groutite ( -MnOOH) of the unit cell dimensions a , b and c , and of the OH-bending modes. These results and a chemical test indicate trivalency of the incorporated Mn. The dehydroxylation (DTA) and the crystallinity (XRD line broadening) are also modified by Mn incorporation. All modifications of the goethites are analogous to the Al-for-Fe substitution.
