It is shown that successive differencing of measurements from geomagnetic observatories or of spherical harmonic coefficients of the geomagnetic field can lead to apparent jerks in individual field components or spherical harmonic coefficients due to noise and signal loss. The point is illustrated by examples of contour maps of the jerk field for 1949.5 showing the relation of large mean square values to spurious foci in regions where there are no magnetic field observations. The maps contrast with those for the 1970 jerk which agree with magnetic field observations.
