The paper examines some implications of the wave-induced heating proposed by Barnes et al., (1971). According to this view, the nonthermal heating process necessary to maintain the solar corona is operating to some extent in the outer corona as well. Attention is directed to some observations as evidence for an extended heating process which survives the transit of the solar plasma to 1 AU. Proton data measured aboard the earth-orbiting satellite Heos 2 are found to support the idea of solar wind heating by fast-mode hydromagnetic wave damping in the solar envelope.
