We performed an analysis of the SAMPEX archival dataset using spectra computed from the PET (proton electron telescope) detector. A listing of thousands of events from 1998 to 2004 in the bounce loss cone was compiled, where events were initially selected on the basis of having the HILT SSD count rate sufficiently above background, then were subject to further screening. There were found two distinct populations of events, those with soft e-folding spectra less than 200 keV and those with hard e-folding spectra of 500 keV or greater. Although the events with harder energy spectra were fewer in number, the event distribution was seen to be clearly dominated by events occurring on the dusk side (12-24 MLT). These duskside events appear to share characteristics of x-ray bremsstrahlung events observed by balloons and they are typically centered about 1-2 L shell outside of the plasmapause according to the O'Brien and Moldwin (2004) plasmapause model. We will show both detailed data from individual events and a statistical summary of the results. Based on previous balloon observations, EMIC waves have been suggested as a possible scattering mechanism for duskside precipitation. These waves are expected to scatter relativistic electrons in the high density region near the plasmapause. We will examine the location of several case study events relative to the plasmaspheric plume using data from IMAGE EUV.
