A description is presented of some data which have been obtained near the transition zone between the E and F regions in an effort to gain a better understanding of mechanisms related to neutral wind dynamics and magnetospheric effects. Most of the data were obtained during an intensive electric field measurement campaign conducted in August 1974. E field measurements were performed on balloons launched from six sites in the northern hemisphere auroral zone. On the basis of the data it is suggested that the nighttime drifts and electric fields measured in a part of the studies are almost always affected by magnetospheric effects and that only during extended periods of geomagnetic quiet are they representative of classical dynamo action driven by solar photon heat input.
