In analysis of surface layers using ΔE-Erest telescopes for the detection of energetic particles, the energy of these particles may exceed the maximum energy for full stopping in the telescope. At these energies the two-dimensional ΔE-Erest spectra shows a discontinuity, since for higher energies the ΔE value is correctly measured, but the measured rest energy decreases for increasing incident energy. Both an analytical procedure and a numerical routine have been developed to calculate the spectrum of particles not fully stopped. The analytical procedure depends only on the measured data of the curve for the fully stopped particles, as well as an extrapolation of this curve to higher energies corresponding to a telescope measuring the full rest energy for all possible incident energies, but with the same ΔE stage. The numerical routine uses stopping power coefficients to calculate a corrected spectrum. Examples are given for the correction of spectra from carbon samples exposed in the JET tokamak, where a range of elements from Be to Ni was measured in single experimental runs.
