The use of a Perkin-Elmer Model 146 Flame photometer for the determination of potassium in the presence of rubidium has been investigated. An interference effect of 2 parts Rb 1 part K is observed. This effect is shown to result in considerable error in potassium determination for the K-Ar dating technique when applied to pegmatite and some granitic materials. By use of a selective filter in the optical path of the instrument, the effect can be eliminated. The non-ionic iron interference previously reported has been further investigated. It has been shown to be significant only for samples of low potassium content such as pyroxenes, some hornblendes and some tholeiitic basalts. A simple method for correcting for iron content in such samples is outlined. The practical significance of these two effects in relation to potassium-argon dating is discussed.
