The NASA Large Space Telescope to be operational in the early 1980s will have to provide very precise pointing over image integration times ranging up to ten hours. To insure that such tight performance requirements are met the Pointing Control System (PCS) design has to reflect all potential sources of attitude disturbances. Design trade-off have to be performed for the total LST system to insure that the system design is optimized to be compatible with the PCS without imposing major cost penalties through equipment operational constraints or on the equipment design. Presented is an evaluation of the design requirements for a high gain antenna that could be used for TDRS (relay satellite) tracking during fine pointing of the LST. A precision computer simulation model is used to establish the design requirements/modifications of an existing design. It is shown that with moderate mass balancing of the antenna dish and momentum compensation of the antenna drive system, TDRS tracking is feasible during fine pointing of the LST.
