NOAA/NESDIS has experimentally implemented a multi-spectral algorithm for obtaining global cloud cover using radiance measurements from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on-board NOAA polar orbiting satellites. The current CLAVR (Phase I) classifies 2x2 pixel arrays of GAC (4 km) observations into CLEAR, MIXED, and CLOUDY categories. A description of the experimental products is presented, including some cloud test and product evaluations.
