The very first genetically related clusters of asteroids known as families were found in the Main Belt by Hirayama in 1918. However, no asteroid families have so far been identified in the the near-Earth-object (NEO) population despite numerous attempts. The chaotic dynamics of the NEO population, which is responsible for the rapid diffusion of members of the family into the background of other objects, is most likely the main reason why NEO families have not yet been identified.One of the most likely mechanisms for creating NEO families is believed to be tidal disruptions during close encounters with planets, not mutual collisions as in the Main Belt. We explore the probability of detecting NEO families using next generation survey systems, such as Pan-STARRS, as a function of the time since the break-up of a parent body. We focus on the families created by disruption of a parent body during a close encounter with the Earth by using realistic asteroid break-up simulations and an orbit distribution that covers the wide range of different NEO orbits. In the first part of the analysis we perform numerical integrations of several tens of thousands of fragments in order to mimic NEO families at different stages in their evolution. Then we test our ability to find the fragments by simulating a large-scale survey using the Pan-STARRS Moving Object Processing System (MOPS) and including both the fragments and a realistic NEO model. Finally we apply several methods for finding the associations and distinguishing the real members of a given family from the random background intruders.
