A method is developed for solving the regular inverse problem of the oblique sounding of the ionosphere in the case of the piecewise-hyperbolic approximation of the vertical profile of electron density. The results are applied to sounding data for midlatitude paths. It is concluded that the proposed method yields a stable estimate of the vertical profile of electron density from ionograms of the oblique sounding of the multilayer ionosphere. In spite of the fact that the estimate is averaged, it comes close to the local density profile at the midpoint of the path.
