The successful interpretation of magnetotelluric data demands well presented, and accurate, estimates of the impedance and tipper functions. In this paper, a method based on the singular value decomposition of the local data matrix, using well known results from multivariate statistical analysis, is proposed as an alternative to current least-squares methods. The advantage obtained is that error on all data channels is recognised, so that impedance estimates are not biased by the choice of ``independent noise-free'' fields. An important result of the method is an extensive and structured capability for the analysis of the frequency-dependent noise which could be used to improve the resulting impedance estimates.
