The SDSS third data release (DR3) spectroscopic sample has provided a sample of ˜ 370,000 spectra with mean redshift z≃ 0.1. Despite the fact that the spectrograph fibers cover only 3" we expect to serendipitously observe a significant number of galaxies with supernova events occurring within the area covered by the fiber. Following Madgwick et al. (2002) we implement a principle component analysis to detect supernovae spectra superimposed upon the SDSS galaxy spectra. Using the positively identified type Ia supernovae in the spectroscopic sample, in conjunction with simulated galaxy+supernova spectra, we can constrain the supernovae detection rate at z=0.1 as a function of galaxy spectral type and environment.
