This paper is concerned with methodology for the parameterization of earthquake sources and also with the determination of magnitudes and other characteristics in the Uniform System of Seismic Observations (USSO) of the U.S.S.R. The possibility for automation of procedures associated with the identification and subsequent measurement of the dynamic and kinematic parameters of body waves of P, SV and SH types is demonstrated. A set of standard parameters for a formalized description of waves of any type is proposed. The advantages of the routine determination of the polarizing properties of body waves recorded at a single three-component digital station are shown. The aim is to improve the assessment of source parameters, particularly focal depth and fault-plane solutions. An algorithm for automatic processing of seismic information, which includes polarization analysis of signals, is suggested.
