The current understanding of the origin of the variations in total solar irradiance and in the Ca II emission from the sun and stars is used to obtain quantitative estimates of the radiative output from the sun corresponding to scenarios that might have characterized the Maunder Minimum. The estimates indicate an irradiance reduction of as much as 0.3 percent below the recent maximum activity (0.24 percent below the mean for 1980-1986). The corresponding decrease in the global equilibrium temperature of the earth is 0.2-0.6 C, which is comparable with the approximately 1 C cooling during the Little Ice Age.
