We have developed an approximative method for computing the internal radiation field of a plane-parallel atmosphere with finite optical thickness. The atmosphere may be inhomogeneous and polarization can be taken into account.The method employs the external radiation field and the equation of radiative transfer. Numerical comparisons with exact results show that our method often works very well.
