The Whole Heliospheric Interval (WHI) extended from March 20-April 16, 2008 (Carrington Rotation 2068), and several simulations of this period have been conducted using the suite of magnetospheric and ionospheric models developed by the Center for Integrated Space Weather Modeling. In this study we use the simulation results to estimate the geoeffective length at various times during the interval. The geoeffective length is defined as that length in the solar wind perpendicular to the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and to the solar wind flow that intersects the dayside merging region. The magnetic flux across this length is the flux that is merged with the geomagnetic field, producing convection in the ionosphere-magnetosphere system. We are able to determine the geoeffective length directly by tracing plasma flow as well as by comparing simulation runs with the full solar wind input to those where the plasma data are unchanged, but where the IMF is set to zero. The difference between the two runs we attribute to reconnection. In addition, we will compare and contrast the results from several simulations with different ionospheric models to investigate the role of the ionosphere in regulating the geoeffective length. We find that a more conducting ionosphere has a smaller geoeffective length, which is consistent with the magnetosheath force-balance model for regulating dayside merging.
