Measurements of ionic diffusion coefficients in melts by A.W. Hofmann have permitted estimates of the possible role of diffusion in causing variations in trace element abundance ratios. Of specific interest is whether differing diffusion constants may cause random changes in ratios whereas differing partition coefficients tend to develop unidirectional changes with decreasing trace element abundance. An evaluation of the two basic driving mechanisms suggests that gravity-induced inhomogeneities would optimally apply in stagnant regions in the low-velocity zone of the asthenosphere, while diffusional separation due to changing proportions of partial melt may develop in rising mantle diapirs. In the first case the variations would occur in systems of the order of kilometers in depth extent that are stable for 107 years; and in the second case in systems of the order of meters in size and tens of years in time duration. Significant effects may arise from the latter case, but the former case can probably be ignored.
