Electron and ion temperatures and mean ion mass at heights of 500, 700 and 1000 km have been calculated for different latitudes in the South Atlantic area by using, with minimum additional information, scale height values derived from distributions of electron concentration which were obtained by means of the Alouette 1 satellite. Both the electron and ion daytime temperatures increase markedly with latitude, by about 800°K over 40° of latitude, but probably less rapidly at night. The upper limit calculated for the increase of plasma temperature with height is ~l.2°K/km at lower latitudes and ~2.8°K/km at higher latitudes. By day the decrease of mean ion mass with height is less pronounced at higher than at lower latitudes; the transition level from oxygen ions to lighter ions lies above 1000 km at higher latitudes, but decreases to 600 km at lower latitudes. At night the scale height results are consistent with a situation in which the transition level rises with latitude but occurs at a lower height than by day. In order to obtain, from the night-time scale height data, values of mean ion mass which agree with some directly measured values, it seems necessary to postulate the existence of a height gradient of plasma temperature at night.
