Two approximate methods are used to infer quantitatively the changes in cross-tail current from magnetic-field variations in the near-earth magnetotail that were observed during a weak magnetic substorm on a contracted oval. The first method applies to the situation of a relatively uniform fractional reduction in the tail current density and a possible shift in current-sheet location; the second, to the situation where a complete diversion of tail current occurs over a portion of the current sheet. The results indicate that the observed return of the magnetic-field configuration to a more dipolar form can be interpreted as a tailward retreat of the cross-tail current-sheet location and an overall reduction of the cross-tail current intensity. In terms of magnetic effects, it is shown that the tailward retreat can also be described as a current disruption near the inner edge of the cross-tail current sheet. The total amount of current decrease in the tail during this substorm is estimated.
