Observations from the Helios plasma experiment (Rosenbauer et al., 1977) are used to determine the average temperature gradients of protons and alpha particles in the solar wind between 0.3 and 1 AU. It is found that He(2+) ions cool more slowly than adiabatically. The radial gradients of T(alpha) inside 0.3 AU are estimated. Evidence is found for continuous interplanetary alpha particle heating, supporting theories of extended ion heating by waves in the outer solar corona.
