By using ground based magnetic observations and by assuming a three-dimensional current system model, the ratio of height-integrated Hall and Pedersen conductivities is calculated for several substorms. It is shown that this ratio decreases when the field aligned current intensity is enhanced. The enhancement is connected with a broadening of the electrojet region.
