A stratum extending from 70 to 110 km is considered which is a transition region between the mesosphere and the thermosphere and is characterized by strong interactions between external energy fluxes and meteorological processes. The specific physical problems discussed include: fluctuation of ultraviolet radiation, humidity in the mesopause region, elemental oxygen near the mesopause, and mid-latitude perturbation of the lower ionosphere.
