Chandrasekhar's idea of dynamical friction acting in a stellar system is examined. The velocity distribution function is then governed by the Fokker-Planck equation, the solution of which gives the rate of escape of stars from the system. Two different solutions are obtained, depending on whether the diffusion coefficient depends on velocity or not. Numerical examples show that the statistical theory gives results that are close to those of classical theory.
