In the paper ``Laboratory Measurements and Modeling of the Fe XVII X-Ray Spectrum'' by G. V. Brown, P. Beiersdorfer, D. A. Liedahl, K. Widmann, and S. M. Kahn (ApJ, 502, 1015 [1998]), it is stated that ``The electric quadrupole lines observed here are the first to be identified in the Fe XVII L-shell spectrum.'' However, it has been brought to our attention that one of these lines, E2L, at 16.3 Å, had been discussed by A. K. Bhatia and S. O. Kastner in ``Expected Intensities of Solar Neon-like Ions'' (Solar Physics, 96, 11 [1985]). In that paper Bhatia and Kastner point out a feature observed in two separate solar spectra (A. B. C. Walker, Jr., H. R. Rugge, and K. Weiss, ApJ, 194, 471 [1974] J. H. Parkinson, Solar Physics, 42, 183 [1975]) whose wavelength was measured to be 16.321 Å by Parkinson, but whose transition was not identified. In their paper, Bhatia and Kastner report a calculation of the electric quadrupole line in the Fe XVII spectrum at 16.33 Å. They identify the previously unidentified line in the solar spectra as this line, hence identifying an electric quadrupole line in the Fe XVII solar spectrum. The authors would like to thank S. O. Kastner and A. K. Bhatia for bringing this to our attention.
