The paper describes the equatorial hiss seen in the topside atmosphere by OGO 6. The hiss is seen over the full range of altitudes from perigee to apogee, with a significant local time dependence, and concentration in the dawn and dusk sectors. The hiss occurs in 'spiky' and 'nonspiky' forms; although largely confined to the equatorial zone, the hiss also extended to middle latitudes and to the polar cap.
