Observations of the latitudinal profiles of magnetic variations across the magnetic equator in Chad are compared with a physical model of the equatorial electrojet involving the effects of ionospheric winds and plasma instabilities. Emphasis is placed on the influence of east-west winds on the height-integrated current density and on the magnetic profiles in the equatorial region. Arguments are presented which strongly support the existence of mean westward winds at high altitudes (125-200 km) in the daytime equatorial ionosphere. The influence of plasma instabilities on the currents is less clear than that of winds. Observations suggest that the electrojet may be widened and its intensity reduced by instabilities in qualitative but not in quantitative agreement with the model. Some of the discrepancies are likely to be due to the gradient-drift instability overlooked by the model.
