The properties of the variation S(R) in the region of the equatorial electrojet are investigated on the basis of data obtained from a chain of stations in Central Africa, and a method of analysis is described which aims at defining for each local hour of the day quantitative parameters (center, width, intensity) capable of simulating the electrojet. The S(R) variation is split into two components, one corresponding to a supplement of currents flowing into a narrow latitude band along the dip equator, and the other corresponding to subjacent currents. This method of analysis provides parameters of the equatorial electrojet which are directly comparable with the Richmond model (1973). Detailed graphs show the variability of the various parameters for yearly, seasonal, and monthly profiles for one and two ribbons. Results show the permanence of the counter-electrojet in the morning hours and its occurrence in the afternoon hours.
