For different Skyrme-type forces we investigate the equation of state of homogeneous nuclear matter under the conditions appropriate to a collapsing star. We find that the stiffness of the equation of state increases significantly as the symmetry coefficient J of nuclear matter increases over the range of its experimental uncertainty. We present analytic expressions for the adiabatic index Γ permitting the elimination of all numerical derivatives.
